Toby Stevenson Qualifies For Friday's Olympic Pole Vault Finals

Athens, Greece - Toby Stevenson (1997-2000 at Stanford) was one of 16 Olympians to clear 5.70 meters in the qualifying round of the men's pole vault at the 2004 Games on Wednesday to qualify for the finals of the event scheduled for Friday, August 27.

Other Stanford affiliates competing Wednesday at the Olympics included Jackie Edwards (women's track and field - Bahamas), Barb Lindquist (women's triathlon), Jonathon Riley (men's track and field) and Courtney Stewart (synchronized swimming - Canada).

Edwards (1989-92) participated in her fourth Olympics for the Bahamas on Thursday as she just missed qualifying for Friday's women's long jump finals by taking 14th in the qualifying round with a top leap of 6.53 meters.

Lindquist (1987-91), a former Stanford swimmer, was ninth in the women's triathlon final with a combined time of 2:06:25.49 and recorded the third best time in the 1.5 kilometer swimming portion of the event (1:28.21). Austria's Kate Allen captured the gold with an overall mark of 2:04:43.45.

Riley (2000-04 at Stanford) was 26th in the first round of 5000 meters (13:38.79) and did not qualify for the finals of the event scheduled for Saturday, August 28.

Stewart (Stanford freshman in 2004-05) and her synchronized swimming partner Fanny Letourneau finished sixth in the Duet Final with 95.334 points (47.500 technical, 47.834 free). Russia's Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova won the gold with 99.334 points (49.417 technical, 49.917 free).

Stanford has a total of 42 affiliates either competing or coaching in the 2004 Games that have combined to win nine medals (two gold, six silver, one bronze).

All three Stanford affiliates coaching at the 2004 Olympics have concluded their coaching assignments. Current head women's softball coach John Rittman was an assistant for the Team USA squad that wrapped up its third straight Olympic gold medal on Monday, August 23. Current Stanford women's swimming head coach Richard Quick served as an assistant coach for the 2004 Team USA women's swimming squad in his sixth Olympic coaching assignment. The American women combined with the Team USA men's swimming squad for an Olympic-high 28 swimming medals. The two Team USA swimming teams also combined for the highest medal count in each of the three medal categories -- gold (12), silver (9) and bronze (7). Former Stanford men's tennis player Patrick McEnroe (1985-88 at Stanford) coached Marty Fish to a silver medal as the men's tennis head coach for Team USA.
