Providence, R.I.- The Stanford coed team headed east again this past weekend to compete in the Sherman Hoyt Trophy hosted by Brown University. Scheduled the week after the all-team consuming four-division Navy Fall, Stanford took the opportunity to send a team of young sailors who would doubtlessly benefit from the experience. The team would face a competitive fleet of seventeen other schools from the east coast. The schools from the New England district put their best foot forward, as this regatta was the second of three chances for qualifying for the Atlantic Coast Championships.
Competing for the Cardinal were sophomores Benjamin Pedrick and Ale Lynberg in A division and freshman Oliver Riihiluoma and sophomore Hannah Burroughs in B division. On Saturday the team saw excellent sailing conditions, as an early 6-10 knot southeasterly breeze picked up to 15-20 knots by the end of the day. After eight races in A division and six races in B on the first day of racing, the Cardinal was in 12th overall, a mere 2 points out of eighth place. Without having the option of sailing with a heavier crew, the team nonetheless did well in the windier races. Riihiluoma and Burroughs were in first in B division at the end of Saturday. Sunday brought a light and variable westerly breeze, allowing for a total of eleven races to be done in each division by the end of the regatta. In A division, Pedrick and Lynberg finished 17th, having learned a great deal about how to start in such a competitive fleet. In B division, Riihiluoma and Burroughs dropped off slightly to finish in 6th. The whole team could easily identify where they need work as they move forward to the end of the fall season and into the important spring season.
The coed sailing team will have their third of three Pacific Coast Championships to be competed in the fall this weekend as they travel to UCI to the Sloop Championships. As a change of pace for the team, they will sail in a keelboat with a crew of three. The winner of this event will head to the Sloop National Championships to be held in St. Petersburg Florida in late November.
