Nationally-ranked Men's Team Faces Western Kentucky in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

Stanford, Ca - The nationally-ranked Stanford basketball team will face the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky University in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at the Edward Jones Dome (formerly known as the Trans World Dome and The Dome at America's Center) in St. Louis on Thursday (March 14). Stanford will play in Game 4 of the day. Below is the schedule for the Midwest Regional in St. Louis.

Game #1 - #4 Kentucky (20-9) vs #13 Valparaiso (25-7), 11:25 a.m. (central time)
Game #2 - #5 Marquette (26-6) vs #12 Tulsa (26-6), 30 minutes following Game 1

Mike Montgomery is in his 16th season at Stanford with a record of 338-155 ... In 15-plus seasons at Stanford, Montgomery has directed the Cardinal to 14 post-season appearances (10 NCAA, 4 NIT) ... Montgomery's overall record (15+ seasons at Stanford, 8 seasons at Montana) is 492-231 ... Dennis Felton is in his fourth season at Western Kentucky ... Last year, the Hilltoppers finished the season 24-7 overall, won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament ... In his four seasons at WKU, Felton has chalked up a 76-44 record.

Series Story
Stanford and Western Kentucky have only met once on the basketball court ... During the 1956-57 season, the Hilltoppers scored a 76-66 victory in the consolation game of the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami ... Stanford has never played a member of the Sun Belt Conference other than Western Kentucky.

Western Kentucky has chalked up a 28-3 record ... The Hilltoppers have won 18 straight games, including winning three games to earn the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title ... Western Kentucky opened the regular season with a 64-52 victory at Kentucky ... Chris Marcus leads the team in scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (9.4 rpg) ... Marcus, who is 7-foot-1 and weights 285 pounds, is a senior from Charlotte, NC ... Marcus is shooting .541 from the floor, and leads the team in blocks with 37 games ... Marcus has played in only 14 games because of a stress fracture ... Marcus led the nation in rebounding last year at 12.1 per game ... Besides being an Associated Press All-American, Marcus was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.
