STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford Gymnastics announced that one of Australia's top gymnasts, Olympian Shona Morgan, a native of Melbourne, has joined the program and will compete on the team starting in 2010-11.
Morgan, no relation to current Stanford gymnast Ashley Morgan, is an accomplished gymnast in her native Australia, winning six gold medals over the last three national championships while also competing in the 2008 Olympics.
In Beijing, Morgan was Australia's highest contributing scorer and second-highest finisher in the all around, placing 15th for the sixth place Aussies.
“I am so excited that Shona will be joining us this fall. She rounds out a stellar class for 2010. Shona is a world-class athlete with extensive international experience,” said Stanford head coach Kristen Smyth. “She is fantastic on all four events but really shines on vault and beam. She is a confident competitor and her routines are packed with difficulty. She brings maturity and international flavor to our program and the collegiate gymnastics community.”
At this year's National Championships, she medaled in all five disciplines, winning gold in both the uneven bar and vault, while finishing as a runner-up in both the all around and balance beam. She was third in the floor exercise for the second time in her career.
In 2009, the Victorian native won three golds-- in the all around, uneven bar and balance beam, and finished second in the vault, earning her the honor of Senior International Victorian State Champion.
Three years ago in 2008, in her second national championship, she won the balance beam for the first of two consecutive years and won a silver in the all around and uneven bar. She was also third in the floor exercise.
After moving up from the junior circuit in 2007, Morgan began her national championship run with a third place finish in the balance beam. In four seasons, Morgan racked up 14 medals, finishing first or second 11 times.
Also in 2008, she won the all around, balance beam, floor exercise and vault at the Golden State Classic in Sacramento.
Morgan also completed at the 2007 World Championships in Germany, placing as high as 21st in the balance beam as Australia was 11th.
Morgan continues to be a member of Australia's Senior National Team.
Morgan joins Lucy Meyer (St. Paul, MN), Lauren Caldemeyer (Indianapolis, IN), Amanda Spinner (Danville, CA) and Kristina Vaculik (Oshawa, Canada) as part of next year's highly touted freshman class.
