Stanford will compete with other Division I, II, III and NAIA schools in the Collegiate Championship which begin Thursday, March 29th. The Collegiate Championship, hosted by the College of William & Mary and the Newport News Parks & Recreation Department, is being held at the Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News, Virginia. Synchronized Swimming is currently categorized as an emerging NCAA sport.
In 1999 the Synchronized Swimming team captured the Trio event and High Point trophy. Stanford has also claimed the Solo title for the last three years.
Stanford's eight member A Team includes seven current and/or former National Team members plus a former junior champ from Russia. Team captain, Shannon Montague, returns as the defending Solo champion while veteran Lindsey Wigginton joins members of the National Team I squad to take on the Trio event.
Head Coach Gail Emery is a five-time member of the US Olympic Team Coaching staff and former head coach of ten-time National Champion Walnut Creek Aquanuts. Assistant Coaches Jackie Douglass and Heather Pease Olson also bring National Team and International experience to the group. Volunteer Coach Olson, a former member of Stanford Synchro, was part of the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Teams. She has recently accepted the position of National Team Director for United States Synchronized Swimming.
