Get an inside look at the Stanford softball team each week. In this edition, sophomore Danielle Miller recaps the team's trip to Tucson, Ariz.
It's Danielle Miller again. To reintroduce myself, I am a sophomore here on the Farm coming all the way from Indiana. I am writing to you right now after literally just getting back to my room from facing off with the Arizona Wildcats this past weekend. We went 1-2 on the weekend, but much more went on off the field that just added to an eventful couple of days.
After having a week off of school with our spring break, facing Cal and then Santa Clara in a midweek game, we were feeling ready to go against Arizona. Boarding the bus on Thursday, we had no doubts in our mind we were as prepared as we could be for the games ahead. To our surprise, we discovered that our plane would be delayed soon after we arrived at the airport. Not to worry though, Stanny softball got to enjoy some dinner at various places around the airport with Pizza My Heart, Jamba Juice or a nice French soup, sandwich and salad place. After filling our stomachs with delicious food, we were once again antsy and ready to go. Our plane came shortly thereafter and we boarded for a flight to LAX and then our final destination of Tucson. After grabbing a quick bite on arrival in Tucson, we checked into our hotel and went to sleep right away for preparation for our game.
Waking up on Friday morning was such a delight. The weather was so gorgeous. It was sunny, warm, and included just a slight enough breeze to make it just about perfect. The breakfast buffet in the hotel capped off a wonderful morning. Taking some time to catch up on some fun reading such as the Hunger Games series or watching our favorite shows or movies, the team enjoyed our down time to relax yet rest up to prepare for our soon-to-be enemy, Arizona. Before we knew it, it was time to get ready and leave the hotel for our pregame meal at Beyond Bread then start warming up.
Pulling up to the field, I just knew it was going to be a good game. They have a beautiful field and stadium, but our team was pumped and ready to go. Battling the sun a little in warm ups only made us stronger. After going through our typical pregame routine, we were lined up and ready to get this show on the road. The Card jumped out early on those kittens, scoring two in the top of the first. After a great game of timely hits by our team and solid defense, the Card stayed tough and pulled out its first Pac-12 win of the year with a 4-1 victory.
After getting a postgame meal at Pei Wei, we knew we were not finished doing business and were already preparing for Saturday's game by resting up as soon as we got back. Game two was crucial; if we won, we took the series but if we lost, it was all tied up. We felt ready to go, but after they started a different pitcher than game one and held us scoreless, we soon found ourselves down 4-0 after the first inning. Scratching out just one run for the rest of the game just wasn't going to be enough and we lost 9-1.
Knowing we still had a series-deciding game three on the line, the Card quickly learned from that game and prepared for the next one. Finally having a game in the sunlight was quite refreshing. Even though they scored first with a home run, we soon recovered and tied up the game with a home run ourselves. Tied 1-1, we were playing with everything we had. It just was not enough though. We just were not able to get those timely hits needed while they hit in a 2-run home run to take the lead and never give it up. We lost 3-1.
Though this weekend did not quite go as planned, we learned a lot and are already working to improve and prepare for the Oregon Ducks. We had a lot of reflection time on our flight home and we will continue to prepare on and off the field this short week. With a new quarter starting Monday morning, we all feel that we are getting a fresh new start! So learning from what has happened yet moving on to focus on our next opponent will be our plan.
Stanny softball will play the Oregon Ducks Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at home before enjoying Easter Sunday with friends and family. We all hope you will come out and support us on our home field! If you cannot make it, then you can keep track of us on Gametracker or Twitter at @StanfordSball for live updates. We love and appreciate all of our fans. PS, if you have not already, we encourage you to like us on Facebook! Thank you for all of your support. We look forward to seeing you all very soon!
God Bless and Go Card,
Danielle Miller, #21
