No. 17 Stanford Nipped By No. 3 Duke, 12-7

Stanford, Calif. - No. 17 Stanford (6-2, 2-0 MPLL) dropped a 12-7 decision to No. 3 Duke (9-1, 1-1 ACC) today at Maloney Field.

Duke put the first point on the board with a goal just over five minutes into the game but Stanford rallied three minutes later to tie the match at 1-1. The Blue Devils posted a quick goal less than 20 seconds later to maintain a lead and added three more goals to take a 5-1 lead. The Cardinal kept the Duke in check for the final eight minutes and scored two goals to cut the deficit to 5-3 at the half.

Sophomore Kelsey Twist netted the first goal of the second half to bring the Cardinal within one, but the Blue Devils went on a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 8-4. Junior Abbi Hills tacked on two goals for the Cardinal to keep pace with Duke, but Blue Devil attacker Corinne Broesler scored three goals in the last 15 minutes to secure the 12-7 victory.

In goal, Christina Saikus collected seven saves as Duke fired off 41 shots this afternoon.

The Cardinal will be back on Monday, when Stanford hosts the UMBC Retrievers at 1 p.m. on March 31st.
