Stanford, Calif.- The Stanford sailing team will open its Fall '08 season with competition at the Harry Anderson Regatta, hosted by Yale University in New Haven, CT. Traveling to the event will be new head coach John Vandemoer along with senior sailors and captains TJ Tullo and Kelly McKenna and sophomores Cole Hatton and Hannah Burroughs. The four returning sailors look to start the year off on the right foot before returning to the farm for a week of preseason training leading up to the start of classes for the academic year.
Preseason will certainly bring excitement to the Farm as the team will welcome both new head coach Vandemoer, previously the head coach of the Navy team, and a new fleet of boats. The sight of 18 brand new FJs and 9 fresh 420s should undoubtedly bring a new energy to the team from the start.
With the graduation of a large, strong '08 class and the absence of some major players in the junior class for the fall season due to study abroad programs, the Cardinal is happy to bring into its ranks one of the strongest incoming freshmen classes in the nation. Recruited scholar-athletes Oliver Riihiluoma, Carolyn Prioleau, Nick Dugdale, Justin Doane, and Grace Porter plus early walk-on Laura Lilly will no doubt all have an immediate impact.
This year of sailing promises increased outside competition on the Pacific Coast as Stanford will host both the women's and coed dinghy nationals in partnership with St. Francis Yacht Club on the city-front. The team will look to build toward this home event as the year progresses; the first step will undoubtedly be a solid week of preseason training.
