Release: 05/17/2003
Los Angeles, Ca - For the second straight season, Stanford has captured both the men's and women's titles in the 10,000 meters at the Pacific-10 Track & Field Championships.

Louis Luchini captured the men's 10,000 meter title at the 2003 Pacific-10 Track & Field Championships during first day competition on Saturday at USC's Cromwell Field in a time of 29:13.28. Oregon's Jason Hartmann finished second (29:18.00) while Adam Tenforde placed third (29:26.41).

It was the fourth time in the last five years that a Cardinal runner had won the 10,000 meter title at the Pacific-10 Championships.

In the women's 10,000 meters, Alicia Craig and Sara Bei competed in their first collegiate 10,000 meters and they finished first and second, respectively, at the conference championships. Craig, a redshirt freshman from Gillette, Wyoming, finished first in a time of 33:42.29 while Bei, a sophomore from Santa Rosa, Ca ran 33:58.06. It was the second straight season that a Cardinal runner had won the 10,000 meter women's title.

Ian Dobson won the 3,000 meter steeplechase title in a time of 8:50.83. Dobson, a sophomore from Klamath Falls, Oregon, became the second Stanford runner in the last three years to win the Pac-10 title in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Jesse Thomas won the Pac-10 crown in 2001. Brett Holts of Oregon finished second (8:55.00) while Erik Emilsson of UCLA ran third (8:58.18).

Dobson, who finished third as a freshman at last year's Pac-10 meet, easily bested his previous career-best time of 8:59.36 at the Big Meet earlier this year. Dobson's time is sixth-best in school history.

In the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Jeane Goff finished second to pre-meet favorite Lisa Aquilera of Arizona State. Aquilera was timed in 10:22.94 while Goff finished at 10:27.65. Washington's Kate Spigel finished third (10:35.31).

Kim Stone finished second in the high jump at 5-11 1/2 (1.82m). Whitney Evans of Washington State had a similar mark, but was declared the winner on fewer misses.

Lillian Bush placed second in the long jump with a career-best 19-11 3/4 (6.09m). Bush' mark is third-best in school history. Jill Camarena also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 55-5 (16.89m).

After the first day of competition, the Stanford women reside in first place with 65 points. Arizona State is second with 46 while UCLA is third with 45.

Stanford is third in the men's competition with 47 points. Oregon is the team leader after day one with 59 points while UCLA is second with 52.

Competition in the two-day championships will continue on Sunday.
