SAN DIEGO – Stanford scored 10 unanswered goals to break open a one-goal game on the way to a 15-10 women’s lacrosse victory over San Diego State on Friday.
Lucy Dikeou and Kelsey Murray scored three goals each to lead Stanford (12-2 overall, 6-1 MPSF), which clinched a berth in the six-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament with the victory. The Cardinal was eliminated from contention for the No. 1 seed, because of Denver's 12-5 victory over Cal. However, Stanford still is in control of the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye, holding a tiebreaker over third-place Oregon (5-1 MPSF). Oregon is the only team that still can seize the No. 1 seed away from Denver (8-0).
Denver will play host to the MPSF tournament May 1-4. Only the tournament champion is guaranteed a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Eight Stanford players scored goals against SDSU (6-8, 3-4), which is fighting for a tournament berth. Alex Poplawski, Rachel Ozer, and Mackenzie Tesei scored two apiece. Hannah Farr had a goal and two assists. Dikeou has scored 13 goals in her past four games.
Defensively, Adrienne Anderson had two draw controls, four ground balls, and caused a turnover. Stanford goalies Lyndsey Munoz and Katie Wiseman combined for 13 saves.
San Diego State scored first, but Stanford answered with four consecutive goals. After the Aztecs closed to within 4-3 with 7:48 left in the first half, Stanford scored 10 consecutive goals over 23 minutes. Kelsey Murray sparked the run off an assist from Laura Klein on a power play.
Stanford continues the road trip with a clash at USC on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a game televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
