STANFORD, Calif. – Five Stanford women’s divers will compete at the NCAA Zone E Diving Meet this week with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships held in Minneapolis, Minn., March 20-22. Sloane Brazina, Alex Clay, Kassidy Cook, Lilly Hinrichs and Stephanie Phipps will make the trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Zone meet.
"The women's Zone E meet has 62 divers--the largest in the country," pointed out diving coach Dr. Rick Schavone. "It will be difficult battle for all our ladies. They need to dive their best but this is the time to compete."
Phipps, who finished eighth in the 1-meter at the 2012 NCAA meet, will look to ride the momentum of her first career Pac-12 title in the event last week. Stanford had four of the top eight finishers in the 1-meter in Federal Way, Wash., as Clay was fourth, Cook came in sixth and Hinrichs placed eighth.
"Stephanie is coming off a great conference meet. Hopefully she will continue diving well," said Schavone. "Alex, Sloane and Lilly are all diving well and definitely have a shot at qualifying."
On the 3-meter, Cook, a freshman, has the second-highest degree of difficulty total among 60 competitors. Cook is coming back from an injury and will be diving off of the 3-meter boards for the first time this season.
Schavone is hoping for an improved and healthier Cook, saying, "Kassidy is farther along from her injury and I'm really hopeful she is ready to dive well."
Phipps was second in the Pac-12’s 3-meter competition and Clay was eighth.
Hinrichs has been the Cardinal’s best platform diver this season. She came in fourth in the event at the conference meet.
Qualification out of the Zone meet is rather complicated, as it’s based on an order of priority set by the NCAA. Once a diver has qualified in a priority spot, they are subsequently jumped over if they fill another priority spot until eight divers have been selected to fill Zone E’s eight spots.
