Four Cardinal players, junior Alex Bowen, sophomore Bret Bonanni, redshirt freshman Adam Abdulhamid and freshman Jackson Kimbell were part of the USA Junior National Team that placed fifth at the recently-concluded FINA Junior World Championship in Szombathely, Hungary.
The USA defeated Spain, 9-7, in Sunday's fifth-place game, with Bowen and Bonanni each scoring twice in the contest. The victory avenged the USA's tournament-opening 8-6 loss to the Spaniards. After that initial loss, the USA rebounded to defeat Slovakia and Russia to close group play then routed Japan, 19-6, to qualify for the quarterfinals. There, the squad's championship hopes were dashed in a 10-6 loss to Italy, but again the USA bounced back, gutting out a 13-11 win over Australia before turning the tables on Spain.
Bonanni led the USA with 19 goals over the team's 5-2 run, while Bowen finished the tournament with 16 goals. Abdulhamid added four goals and Kimbell three.
All four players will jopin the Cardinal next week as it opens preseason practice ahead of the 2013 campaign. Stanford, tabbed second in the MPSF Preseason Coaches Poll Tuesday, opens the season at the Brown Invitational the weekend of Sept. 7-8. Stanford will also play host to the 2013 National Collegiate Water Polo Championship Dec. 7-8 at Avery Aquatic Center.
