POREC, Croatia - Stanford freshman fencer Alexander Massialas claimed the Junior World Championships men's foil title, defeating Italy's Lorenzo Nista, 15-13, in the final bout Friday.

Fresh off his 2013 NCAA men's foil national championship, Massialas delivered a convincing performance to claim his first Junior World Championship in an individual event. In a first to 15 points format, Massialas won his quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches by a combined score of 45-31.

Massialas defeated U.S. teammate Race Imboden in the quarterfinals, 15-8, before knocking off Russia's Kirill Lichagin, 15-10, in the semifinals to claim a spot in the championship round.

Massialas claimed the 2013 NCAA men's foil title on March 22 in San Antonio, Texas. He defeated Penn State's David Willette, 15-10, in the final round to claim Stanford's seventh men's foil championship and first since Felix Reichling in 2000.
