STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team was edged 18-15 by Utah Valley, Friday, in Orem, Utah. The Cardinal drops to 5-13 overall, while the Wolverines improve to 4-2.

Stanford and Utah Valley each won five bouts on the night, but the Wolverines scored bonus points in three of their five to capture the dual win.

Redshirt freshman Evan Silver posted a come-from-behind win over Jade Rauser at 125 pounds. Rauser led 3-0 early in the second, but Silver cut the lead to 3-2 with a takedown. After choosing neutral to start the third, he then registered the winning takedown for the 4-3 victory. Silver now boasts a 22-10 overall record and a 14-4 mark in duals. His 22 wins ties for the ninth-most wins by a rookie in school history.

Utah Valley won the next three bouts to take an 11-3 lead in the dual. Stanford junior Kyle Meyer cut into the lead with a 2-1 decision over Chase Cuthbertson at 157 pounds. There was no score after the first period. Meyer deferred and Cuthbertson chose down to start the second. He tallied an escape, but not before Meyer had secured riding time. Meyer chose down to begin the third and tallied an escape with 1:06 of riding time still in his favor. The win was his seventh of the season and fourth in dual competition.

Junior Bret Baumbach rode the momentum into his match, posting a 5-2 decision over Abner Cook at 165 pounds. All of the points were scored in the second period as Cook deferred and Baumbach chose down. He quickly tallied the escape and then registered a takedown for a 3-0 advantage. He was awarded a penalty point before Cook scored a reversal. Cook chose down to start the third, where Baumbach tacked on riding time for the win. He has now won eight matches in a row and improves to 19-8 on the year.

The Wolverines increased their lead to 18-9 by winning the next two bouts. Stanford's Michael Sojka picked up a 3-2 overtime decision over David Prieto at 197 pounds. Trailing 2-1 heading into the third, Sojka forced extra time with an escape. No points were scored in the sudden victory minute. Sojka rode Prieto out in the first overtime period. Prieto was obligated to let Sojka escape in the second overtime in order to win with a takedown. However, Sojka held him off for the win. The redshirt freshman is now 13-13 overall this season.

Junior heavyweight Dan Scherer posted the final win for the Cardinal, a 3-2 decision over Adam Fager, but it would not be enough to catch the Wolverines in the dual score. There was no score in the first period. Fager chose down to start the second, where Scherer rode him for the entire two-minute period. Starting in the down position in the third, Scherer quickly tallied the escape. Fager attacked and registered the takedown to capture the lead, but another escape by Scherer and 1:46 of riding time gave him the win. He improves to 18-8 overall and 11-6 in duals this year.

Up next, Stanford continues its road trip in Boise, Id., taking on Boise State on Sunday, Feb. 3. The Cardinal and Broncos square off at 11 a.m. PT in Taco Bell Arena.
