How Rose Bowl Game Seating Works

The Cardinal football team is heading to the Rose Bowl Game for the second consecutive year. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind fans about the seat assignment process for bowl games.

The Rose Bowl Game allocates a fixed number of tickets in pre-determined locations to the participating institutions from the Pac-12 and Big Ten. There are also tickets allocated to non-participating institutions from the Pac-12 and Big Ten, local community members, Tournament of Roses Committee members, and corporate sponsors.

As the Pac-12’s participating institution, Stanford’s tickets are located in three separate sections on the East side of Rose Bowl Stadium. In between Stanford’s sections are the allocations for the Pac-12 and Big Ten non-participating institutions, meaning that Stanford’s three sections are not contiguous.

Within Stanford’s sections, seat locations are assigned based on the degree to which each ticket purchaser engages with the university. Financial support for Stanford and the athletics program is critical to helping the Cardinal compete for bowl berths and win championships. Other forms of engagement, such as season ticket purchases and volunteer service, are also important.

Ticket orders for this year’s Rose Bowl Game again showed that there is far more demand for $185 seats than we can fulfill from our allocation of tickets. In addition, there are fewer $185 tickets available for Stanford’s use this year because the Pac-12 and Big Ten non-participating institution tickets obtained by Stanford last year were not available in similar quantity this year.

Accordingly, we used a fair and established system for assigning seats that considers engagement with Stanford during the seating process. We are extremely grateful for all of the support that Stanford Athletics receives, and we wish to recognize this during an event that is made possible in large part because of donor and fan engagement.

The following criteria, not necessarily in this order, determine seat location:

  • Annual gifts to the Buck/Cardinal Club
  • Years of season ticket purchases in all season-ticketed sports
  • Total lifetime giving to Stanford Athletics
  • Total lifetime giving to Stanford University
  • Bequest intentions to Stanford Athletics
  • Volunteer service on an athletic or university board
  • Stanford alumnus/a
  • Former Stanford student-athlete

To increase your level of engagement for future events, please consider becoming a season ticket holder or making a gift. Please visit www.buckcardinal.com or email buckcardinal@stanford.edu for more information.
